Came home today to not one, but two packages from UPS. One contained the 8PSK module that my Dish Network 6000 HD receiver needs to receive the new HDTV channels on Dish. I had resisted getting those channels because of the extra monthly cost, but Dish forced my hand because they are moving the HBO and Showtime HD channels to a satellite where I could only get them with the 8PSK module. Luckily they threw in the module free for signing up for a year of the HD package. Now in addition to HBO-HD, Showtime-HD, CBSNY-HD and the few local over-the-air HD channels I can get, I also get ESPN-HD, DiscoveryHD Theater, HDNet and HDNet Movies. All of the new channels looked really good. I was even fascinated by an HD hockey game on ESPN-HD.

The second package was a bunch of Advanced Resolution music CDs I’d ordered from CD Universe, all featuring multichannel mixes:

David Bowie – Reality [Hybrid SACD]
Chicago – Chicago II [DVD-Audio]
Crowded House – Crowded House [DVD-Audio]
Foo Fighters – One By One [DVD-Audio]
Mike Oldfield – Tubular Bells [Hybrid SACD]
Neil Young – Harvest [DVD-Audio]

The Mike Oldfield disc features the original quadraphonic mix of Tubular Bells from the 70s. I hear that it still beats out the upcoming DVD-Audio of his re-recorded Tubular Bells 2003, due out in a month or so.

I’ve really been getting too many of these discs lately – I don’t even have time to listen to them. I’ll probably slow down for awhile now and catch up on them. They’re just so cool. I find it weird that I like them so much that I’ve actually bought some “classic rock” albums that I’ve never had on CD, like Chicago II and Dark Side of the Moon. More obsessive collectiveness.

Good thing the weekend is coming up…

Latre.
