That Darn Whedon

Life is semi-good – I actually got out of work today after 8 hours instead of the usual 10 I’ve been doing lately. And the snow continues to fall ever so lightly. It feels more like winter all the time. I finally sent my iPod in for servicing – it died yet again. Music – who needs it?

Now I’m going to talk about one of my favorite things – TV. Specifically, the 100th episode of Angel that was shown this week. I’ll put my comments in the “more..” link below, since I will be mentioning spoilers…

Great anniversary episode. I thought it was pretty gutsy of them to bring back Cordelia and then kill her off (although resurrection is pretty common in Joss Whedon’s playground). But I sure didn’t like that they did it. Angel has become a bit of a “Boy’s Club” lately (as opposed to Buffy, which was all about the girls) and removing Cordy, seemingly forever, cements that direction even more. Oh sure we have Fred, Harmony and slinky evil Eve, but they don’t get to do much. That’s kind of one of the bad things about bringing Spike into the show – you have to give a lot of story and air time to both Spike and Angel now, which doesn’t leave as much room for the supporting players. But I quibble.

Despite the ending, it was an uplifting episode which finally sees an end to Angel’s dourness, and had lots of humor (Angel’s racquetball partner, for example) and snappy dialog as well. It almost seemed like a Whedon-written/directed episode. David Fury did a good job on that front – Angel remains the best written show on TV. But to think it’s the last time we’ll see Cordy swinging a sword and cutting down demons with the wisecracks a-flowin’… ah well. They’re breaking up that old gang of mine.

Latre.
