90 Degrees Too Steep The Cone

I’ve posted another old Reign of Frogs song on the MP3 page. This one is called Waiting For The Ecstacy and it’s really old. I hope Greg does not wound me for putting it up. It’s one of his earliest vocal performances. Forgive the sound quality. The original recording was on a 4-track and the MP3 was derived from a mixdown on an old cassette tape. Just think of it as having a lot of Indie Spirit, like a Guided By Voices song without guitars.

Not much else going on, though I do want to push the new show Wonderfalls, Friday nights on Fox. Since it’s a good show that’s been given the Fox Friday Night Death Slot, I’m joining the herd of Internet supporters in pushing this show any way I can. The nifty theme song is by Andy Partridge of XTC, so there’s a reason to watch right thar. But aside from that, it’s just plain funny and y’know… heartwarming and all that crap, in ways that the similarly-themed Joan Of Arcadia (which I also watch) is not. The lead actress, Caroline Dhavernas, reminds me visually of a young Rena Sofer, especially in the eyes and mouth. That’s always a plus.

In hi-rez music news, last week I bought and listened to the new multichannel DVD-Audio version of Porcupine Tree’s In Absentia – modern prog rock at its finest. The original CD was one of my favorite albums of 2002. Porcupine Tree manages to sound “new” while still exhibiting a heavy link to old school prog and new wave. The keyboardist for the band is Richard Barbrieri, who used to be in Japan. There’s a review of the DVD-A disc here that pretty much says it all. It’s an awesome ride and a good one to really turn up loud. The soundstage is wide and open, but the surround channels are not all that gimmicky. The tunes can sound a bit repetitive at times, but when those monster riffs or catchy melodies kick in, it’s all worth it. PT is a band that can makes lyrics like “I got wiring loose inside my head” sound catchy.

Latre.
