It’s Going To Be A Long Three Months

Eh, long bad day at work today. Crises after crises. Ah, but it’s good to be employed.
So last night, the phone kept ringing every ten minutes or so, and the Caller ID said “Out of Area”. I don’t usually answer those calls, since they invariably turn out to be telemarketers (even in this age of the No Call List) or, more likely, charitable organizations (and everyone knows how selfish I am). Anyway, I got sick of the constant ringing and decided to answer one, just so I could tell off whoever it was, even if all the calls didn’t come from the same place.
It turned out to be an automated poll taking machine, who only wanted to ask me two questions which I could answer with my touch tone phone. The two questions were:
1) “If the election were held today, who would you vote for: Kerry/Edwards or Bush/Cheney?” (I guess they know something I don’t – that W. is going to keep Dickie as his running mate?)
2) (Paraphrased – I don’t remember the exact wording.) “Would you vote for Kerry/Edwards because you believe in the platform of the Democratic National Committee, or because you don’t want President Bush to be reelected?”
Makes me wonder what question 2 would’ve been if I had answered question 1 differently? “Would you vote for Bush/Cheney because you believe in the platform of the Republican National Committee, or because you think Kerry is a terrorist sympathizer who will eat your puppies?”
This post should settle the question once and for all about if any of my relatives actually read this. (I’m guessing no.)
Latre.

Unlike you, we have to answer "Out of Area" ones ‘cos calls from Australia show up that way, as do calls from my Mom who has a privacy block on her number. I read that if you use VoIP software, you can get at the number despite that (it’s transmitted anyway for technical reasons, along with a flag telling a compliant callerID not to display it) but I digress. I’ve never received an automated poll but I am curious why they’d block the number like that, unless it’s because the call originated in some telco-friendly place such as the Bahama Islands.
For awhile we were getting automated calls for some labor union, trying to rally support for some crap or other – the originating number connected to a fax machine or something, and the message included no voice number. If you didn’t answer it’d happily talk to your answering machine. Finally tracked down the union’s website and sent ‘em hate mail ’til they took us off their list. All the other calls we get are wrong numbers from Spanish-speaking people.
Say, I just realized that if I ramble on long enough in these replies, I could make this MY blog too…
So why do you think Bush might dump Cheney, the guy who arguably got him the job in the first place? I half-suspect that if he tried to do that, he’d end up with the severed head of an oil derrick on his bed the next morning.

The only reason Bush would dump Cheney is if he thinks having a younger, more hip, less hostile running mate will appeal to people who are on the fence. But yeah, since Cheney seems to be the real power behind the throne, it’s pretty unlikely. And hey, when it comes to politics, I’m always talking out of my ass anyway.
