It’s Not Confidential

Just wanted to say how much I’ve been enjoying the CD Hot Fuss by The Killers. I know they’re somewhat the flavor of the moment right now (especially the song Somebody Told Me, which is incredibly catchy), but that doesn’t mean they’re not good. Kind of reminds me of what The Strokes would sound like if the Strokes’ vocals were better, they wrote catchier melodies, used more keyboards, and had more of an 80s new wave vibe to them. Okay, maybe they don’t sound like The Strokes much at all. Maybe Franz Ferdinand crossed with The Strokes though.
In fact, the CD is tied with the Franz Ferdinand as my favorite of the year so far. Bubbling just under those two are the latest from Shalini (Metal Corner) and Statuesque (Choir Above Fire Below). Just coincidentally enough, both are available from my buddies at 125 Records. It really helped me seeing Statuesque live last week, since that brought the songs on the new record to life in my mind.
In the new toy category, I recently bought a Dish Network PVR-921 receiver, a Digital Video Recorder which finally lets me record and playback High Definition programs (from satellite as well as over-the-air) in addition to normal Standard Definition ones. I traded in my old Dish 508 DVR and Dish 6000 HD receiver, as this one unit has two tuners and replaces both of them, so I can record two things at once while watching a third (recorded) program. No more having to watch HiDef fare (like Six Feet Under on HBO) live. And now I can pause and rewind HD football games. So far, it’s very cool. Supposedly it’s a pretty buggy unit, but I haven’t had much of a problem with it yet. It’s going to come in really handy when the new fall season starts. Especially if I’m going to be as busy working extra hours as I think I am…
This my last new gadget for a long time… I promise…
Latre.

Picked up Hot Fuss on your recommendation, and I’m enjoying it very much. Not sure it’s as strong as Franz Ferdinand, though, at least not on the first two listens. One man’s meat and all that, though.

Give it a few more listens, Alan. It grows on you. The most annoying thing about it to me is the processed, vocoder-like vocals, which seems to be all the rage these days (see The Strokes). But the FF album has that too.
Hot Fuss had me at the bass riff in the opening song…

Well, I plan on listening to it every day for a while, it’s disc one in my new ‘Big box o’ CDs’. I also love the bass riff on Jenny Was a Friend of Mine. Apparently there’s a video for Somebody Told Me, which I’ll have to try to track down. Tickets for the 10/22 show go on sale a week from today, and I’m definitely pondering going.
