Drink It Dow Ow Own

The Ted Leo show last night was very good – Ted is an amazing performer with a great stage presence, and the songs really sound good (and faster) in a live setting. I wish he had done “Ballad of the Sin Eater”, but I guess you can’t have everything. There were problems, mostly with the arrangement of the club itself (see Alan’s blog for details). Completely sober is definitely a new way to experience a rock concert for me. I was surprised that Lucero, whom I had never heard of, has a bigger local fan base than Ted. But since a lot of the show-goers were underage at this all-ages show, maybe they have a bigger following among the youngsters. And like Alan says, it was actually nice that some of the crowd had cleared out by the time Ted took the stage. It was also nice that the whole thing was over by 11:30, since I’m old and tired.

Still haven’t done much on the solo album yet, though I did come up with a new song (thought up while driving home from work on Friday night) called Eight Weeks To A You You Can Live With. It’s somewhat likely this will be the first or second song I finish, as I’ve got a good start on it.

Latre.

I am shocked, shocked, that Ted did not play "Ballad of a Sin Eater" in Denver! Maybe he didn’t have time since it had to end so early? (He’s done it as an encore both times I’ve seen him.) Anyway, I’m glad you had a mostly positive experience since I know you were a bit concerned about going.

I think it was a combination of the time constraints, and the crowd trying to be sensitive to his vocal issues, but he didn’t do an encore. At least I hope that was the reason there wasn’t a big call for one. Early in the set he asked someone in the crowd if they wanted to sing one of his songs for him, but they declined. When I asked him after the show about the percussion instruments he’d asked via his website for people to bring, he said he didn’t have the voice for that song, and he said he guessed the person he asked to do it thought he was joking. I’m not sure what song he was referring to, can’t think of one off the top of my head with lots of percussion, but it may be something he only does live.

Well, duh, stupid me. Both "Ballad of the Sin Eater" and "Hearts of Oak" have lots of percussion now that I’m listening for it. It was probably "Hearts of Oak" he couldn’t do.
