I Guess I Have Time…

I saw The Incredibles yesterday, which was, well, Incredible. It’s weird – I’ve actually kind of gotten bored with the whole computer animation thing lately, even though I used to really be into it. I still haven’t even seen Shrek 2. Somewhere around Toy Story 2 or Monsters Inc, I started getting bored with Pixar. Finding Nemo was okay, but I felt left out for not liking it as much as everyone else seemed to. Maybe I just didn’t dig the hype.
But The Incredibles revived my interest in the genre. Not only was it funny, touching, and exciting, but the animation and the visuals were just so outstanding. I think it helps that if you’re going to do a computer animated story featuring humans, you have a reason that the humans look and move intentionally unreal, so the audience doesn’t concentrate on how much they really don’t look and move like real humans. The ElastiGirl stuff is really out there, and the filmmakers obviously used Plastic Man as inspiration, especially with that red and yellow costume. If ever someone does do a Plastic Man movie, I hope it’s Pixar. Makes me wonder how Mr. Fantastic will compare in the upcoming live action Fantastic Four movie…
So now I’m on vacation and am desperately trying to get work done on the solo album. (BTW, Cash Nexus has a blog site up for NaSoAlMo, listing all the participants and such – very cool.) I’m really getting into that stage now where I’m wondering what I’ve gotten myself into, yet I don’t want to give up. But those inner voices are strong (especially the ones that keep saying “play a videogame, read a book, watch a DVD, go see a movie”) and they’re getting harder to resist. Plus, I just get so frustrated trying to force creativity. It’s way more stressful than I thought it would be. I gave up work for this?
I’ve decided the only way I’m going to have a chance of finishing the project is to change my strategy. Originally, I was going to work on one song until it was finished, and then move on to the next one. The problem with that is I can never really declare a song finished – I’m constantly fiddling with it and tweaking it. So now I’ve decided I’m actually going to write all the songs first and get the basic structure (chords, lyrics, tempo, length, basic rhythmic backing, etc.) for each one into the computer. Then I’ll go back and record the audio and tweak the rest of it once I’ve got all the songs set up. I already had the structure of Lighten Up! in Sonar, and today I outlined Eight Weeks and Greektown. Greektown ended up being something of an epic and has too many lyrics. As opposed to the other two, I recorded rhythm guitar first and I’m basing everything off that. It has kind of a Neil Young sound to it. It was supposed to be somewhat humorous but ended up being pretty serious. I really like it so far. I also like what I’ve got for Eight Weeks – it’s going to sound somewhat Reign of Frogs-ish.
I also think I’m going to use Alan’s song title suggestion of Plates Are Hot, which will replace The Heat Was Hot, and which will make a nice companion piece to Greektown. I had always intended Hot to be mostly instrumental anyway, so it’s not a big change.
So tomorrow I guess I’ll work on Faster Than You and Plates Are Hot. Unless those voices in my head win out…
Latre.

I like the new look, but where’s the photo of you all stretched out in leather pants I heard so much about?
