Snow Falling On Seaters

This is one of the strangest weather patterns we’ve had in the spring in the Denver area for quite some time. It’s been snowing off and on for days, but not heavy enough for any real accumulation, and it’s too warm to really stick to the streets. Because of the weather, the Rockies game I was supposed to go to on Thursday afternoon was cancelled. The outing was part of a work thing, and we didn’t get word on the cancellation until we were all downtown. So we spent the afternoon at the Wynkoop playing pool and shuffleboard. We’ll be seeing a replacement game sometime in June, so the cancellation worked out well and we’ll end up getting off work two afternoons instead of just one.
The weather also made a strange backdrop for the “commitment ceremony” between my 75-year old father and his ladyfriend yesterday at the Mile Hi Church (known for it’s bizarre architecture – the main domed building looks like a giant spider – and for playing a McDonald’s in Woody Allen’s Sleeper). It was actually kind of cool seeing the snow falling through the big window in the reception room and covering the trees outside. Apparently this commitment ceremony thing is pretty big among senior citizens who want to pledge themselves to each other but at their age don’t want the financial and other entanglements that come with marriage. My dad’s case is more unusual though, because the happy couple is not even going to be living together. The ceremony itself was like a mini-wedding (I was the “best man”) and was short and sweet. I gather there aren’t too many churches that will do this sort of thing, but Mile Hi Church is one. They do more of these ceremonies for (heterosexual) senior citizen couples than they do for gay couples.
The snow has stopped for now, but I’m sure it will be back soon…
