My Favorite Thing to Eat

It just melts in your mouth – the flavors blending together yet distinct. Pure ecstacy. ‘Nuff said.

Pet Peeve: People who have never even tried sushi because they “don’t do raw”. Okay, but be careful with that Steak Tartare! And be sure to get that burger well done – no pink inside!

Latre.

People who have never even tried sushi because they ???don???t do raw???.
Yikes, wait until they find out what’s in their salads!

I will admit to (a) having been very reluctant to eat things raw that most of the time one doesn’t or cannot eat raw, but (b) having tried good sushi (from the same place we ate at) with the raw stuff, and liking the flavor a lot, but (c) still being squicked out enough by the texture that I just decide it doesn’t work for me. And unfortunately, texture’s really important to me (one reason I dislike squash, frinstance…).

Are you seriously trying to suggest that you know people who won’t eat sushi but WILL eat steak tartare? Pull the other one!

I was forced to eat squash as a child and hated it, so I can’t even look at it these days. For all I know, it could’ve been the texture rather than just the taste that put me off it (I remember it activating my gag reflex), but I’ve always assumed it’s just the taste.

I know what you mean about the texture with sushi though. I had some problems with that initially (especially in Japan, when I nearly threw up on a Japanese associate). But once I got into the gauche (Western?) habit of dipping it into the soy/wasabi mixture, the last bit of resistance vanished.

Janet, don’t you thoroughly cook all salads before eating them?

You almost threw up on a Japanese associate? I think that’s called “Bushing” over there.

But this was in the pre-Bush days! Heck, it was before the Bush Sr days! (1987)

Not to put too fine a point on it, but that *was* Bush Sr. who (as George Carlin puts it) engaged in a personal protein spill on the Japanese prime minister.

this may fall into the category of trying to make you like heavy metal (hey, isn’t there spozed to be mercury in shellfish?) but a big part of my leap from being so-so on sushi to loving it was to go strictly a la carte. in my case that means almost strictly fish vs. shellfish — i much prefer the fish texture, and the n-piece assortments almost always have something i’m not so keen on.

this brands me forever a dilettante. like i care.

Yeah John, but since I don’t think that happened to Bush Sr until he was President, then I had him beat (or I would’ve if I had actually spewed, and if the Japanese guy was an important official, and if I was President).
