My Steps Are Aimless And I Couldn’t Care Less

For the past couple of days, I’ve been listening in my car to the CD Headache Rhetoric from the band Close Lobsters. They were a jangly guitar band from Scotland with some psychedelic overtones who were briefly popular in the late 80s and put out two and a half albums. They had a minor hit with Let’s Make Some Plans, which was covered by The Wedding Present (I haven’t heard their version). The Lobsters’ music is generally bright and bouncy, while the lyrics are pretty obscure and frequently downbeat. They put a lot of catchy, interesting instrumental bits between vocal sections in the songs and often don’t have conventional choruses. Headache Rhetoric was their last release, and also the least satisfying. Something about the production puts me off – I don’t like the way the guitars and vocals are recorded and mixed. Too muddy. But there’s some interesting stuff on it nevertheless. Not sure why I pulled it out of the collection (especially in lieu of the far more superior debut Foxheads Stalk This Land or the EP What Is There To Smile About?, which came out between the two albums), but I had a hankering to hear it. I disappeared one day in a blinding blue flash.

So… I forgot to ask… what did everyone think of the debut of Rome on HBO? I liked it. I didn’t think it was that hard to follow the characters or plot, despite the warnings. There was plenty of exposition, sometimes jarringly out of place. Far superior to the similarily themed Empire mini-series on ABC earlier this summer. And since it’s HBO, you get all that nice violence and boobies and stuff. I can’t wait to see how it all turns out. Will this Caesar guy eventually get assassinated? He sure seems to have a lot of enemies. Will Octavian survive his troubled teen years (and slutty mother)? Will the Republic stand? Why do people from different generations all look to be about the same age? Why do they speak in British accents instead of Italian ones? Guess I’ll have to keep tuning in to find out.

Latre.
