A Taste of Things to Come?

I stopped for gas on the way to work today, as it’s been two weeks and I’m getting low. I also had the idea of filling up before Rita hits and the prices rise as expected. I went to Safeway Fuel because I get a 6 cents per gallon discount for buying over $100 worth of groceries the last time I went shopping (as opposed to the usual 3 cents per gallon discount for Safeway Club members who shop too often and only buy a little at a time). After the discount, the price was $2.759.
I was not the only one with this idea, as I encountered a line at the pumps. Luckily, I got behind someone who was just leaving and so didn’t have to wait long. But by the time I left, there were already a couple of cars lined up behind me. I’m just surprised the prices haven’t gone up already, since demand seems to be high and most people are already assuming that Rita is going to do a lot of damage to our oil processing infrastructure in Texas.
I missed out on the gas station lines of the early 70s (a little too young to be driving), but it looks like I’m finally going to be able to experience what it was like. Or maybe not. We’ll see how it goes.
Latre.

Around here (Vicksburg, Mississippi) it’s not just gas. I also topped off my car today, and while I was at the station I saw people filling gas cans and buying bags of ice. The worst we can really expect from Rita here is a little rain, but everyone seems to be gun shy.

John, I’m glad Mississippi isn’t in the primary path this time! Though I wish there wasn’t a path to worry about at all…
