Blow Hard 2: Blow Harder

Lo! The 19th Angel - RadShac!
Yep, we gots weather. As you can see by the photo, the outside temp is darn low. The picture was taken around 10pm. The strange thing is that it’s lightly snowing, and snow is pretty rare when it’s this cold.

Yesterday was very windy, though not quite as cold unless you count the windchill. Gusts were hurricane force (98mph was recorded nearby). There isn’t much that can keep you warm outside in a combination of intense cold and winds that strong. It was sunny out though, and the blowing snow left over from the last storm made for some stunning vistas in the distance. I wish I had gotten some pictures – it was like an intense sparkly white fogbank rising from the ground and enveloping the trees and buildings while the sun shined down from above.

There were signs of wind damage around the neighborhood – the usual downed fences and that sort of thing. The price sign at a local gas station was ripped apart. My barbecue grill on the back deck was knocked a few feet away from its normal position, even though there was snow on the deck. But what astonished me is that my satellite dishes, which jut out from my roof on a corner of the house, were not knocked out of alignment one iota. They have survived many a forceful windstorm. I must hand it to Dish Network on manufacturing such sturdy antennas. Although I also have to compliment myself too, since I installed them (with the help of some friends).

I probably shouldn’t have said that, because now I’ve jinxed it.

What weird weather will we get next?

Latre.

    Weather, you say?

I’ve been in Australia about 4 days now – midsummer here, so we expected 110 degrees and all the flies we could eat, like last time we visited in December. Ironic, because it was raining and (relatively) chilly when we left LA… Well, it’s raining and (relatively) chilly since we’ve been here – and at times we’ve had wind, hail, overcast skies, and occasional bursts of sun which make the temps rise into the 90s for about half an hour, then back to rain!

Yes, Melbourne has the very same slogan as Denver – “If you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes” – but I’ve spent more than two months here over the past few years and have never seen it in action, until now.

But there’s still flies everywhere. (partly ‘cos we’re staying with the wife’s brother, (relatively) out in the country compared to her old flat near downtown)

I can’t log into my Email or get anything useful done until I get at least one of the five machines I have access to clear of spyware and behind a firewall. So this is one of the few ways I have of communicating with the outside world, outside of AIM Express. Thing is, I’m pretty sure not even my employer has missed me…

Glad to be of service as a way for you to communicate with the outside world. Too bad I don’t believe this “Australia” actually exists – I think you’re still on some Hollywood sound stage. I also have issues with the “fact” that the world is round and that we are supposedly descended from monkeys.

You should send this photo to Josh so he can see the mug in action…

I dunno, Sue – it’s kinda lame. There’s not even a real person in the photo. The reason I used the mug was because it was the closest thing on hand I had to prop up the temperature display so Asuka could point to it.

Nah, I like it: somehow the doll – ’scuse me, “action figure” – and the thermometer and the Milford cup all work together. C’mon, man: the worst Josh could do is publicly ridicule you in his very widely read website. Oh.

It’s really more of an “inaction figure” as she is not poseable. I can, however, replace her pointing arm with another one that’s in a different position. I think it holds a beer or teddy bear.
