Fun With Song Sequencing

One of the cool things about listening to an iPod on shuffle play is the odd juxtapositions you get when switching from one song to another. Sometimes it’s just an interesting synchronicity like two songs from two different bands that are related in lyrical or musical content showing up one right after the other. Other times you get a really cool transition from song to song, where in another universe, it sounds like the songs could’ve been on some weird album together. When I was out walking (still not running yet – soon, hopefully) yesterday, one transition came up that just made me laugh. It was Harvester of Eyes by Blue Öyster Cult, followed by North San Bruno Dishonor Trip by The Loud Family. Eyes ends with a music box motif that on BÖC’s Secret Treaties album, abruptly segues into the bombastic beginning of Flaming Telepaths. Dishonor Trip starts out with a spoken word thing and gets weirder from there. In order to show you what these two sound like together, I’ve done a little MP3 of it. I just tacked the end of Harvester onto the beginning of Dishonor Trip (which plays in its entirety – it’s a short song). Enjoy!

I’d listen, but I’m just down the road from the RIAA HQ and am afraid they’d key my car or something.

So does that mean that you’re back from Australia, Ben?

Back indeed, though it’s getting harder to tell simply by watching the TEE-v… Aussie commercials and even the news are becoming as Americanized as the sitcom lineup these days, which is sad for several reasons. More later, in a more appropriate forum – we were talking about the RIAA, were I not?
I read a story about how France has legalized file sharing. I wonder when the bombs will start falling…

What I do when I run into one of those wonderful segues – since I often make mix CDs anyway – is make a note of it, so I have some to draw from for future mixes.
