Will Anyone Remember?

Tonight’s episode of Gilmore Girls (yes, I watch it and I’m not ashamed to admit it – it’s funny and moving) had the Town Troubadour, played by real life musician Grant Lee Phillips, singing the song 40 Years. I found this very touching, and I’m sure it was meant as a tribute. The song was originally performed by House of Freaks and was written by HoF singer/guitarist Bryan Harvey. Harvey, his wife, and two daughters were brutally murdered in their Richmond, VA home on New Year’s Day this year. Fortunately, it appears they’ve caught the people responsible. I always liked House of Freaks a lot and think their second album Tantilla is a classic. The song 40 Years is about the legacy of the dropping of the atomic bomb, but somehow the lyrics take on a more personal meaning now that its author is gone. “A million hearts a million minds/Have lived and died in 40 years/Pray for yourself and for your memories/And be thankful we’ve had 40 years”.
Latre.

Wow, that’s news to me. House of Freaks was one of my favorite bands for a long time, and Cakewalk was one of the CDs I used to give as presents on a regular basis.

That is so terribly sad.

Thanks for letting me in on this: I don’t really know HoF’s repertoire (I have one CD), but the song, and its being sung, are certainly a nice tribute and gesture. I think it’s revealing that a show whose music is incidental to it is far more realistic and interesting in its treatment of music and bands than shows that supposedly are *about* music and bands…but which are assembled by clueless TV execs whose notion of music is based on sneaking into their teenage daughters’ rooms while they’re off at school and scribbling down notes based on their iPods’ playlists. If they know how to operate an iPod.

“Your comment is awaiting moderation”?!? WTF? I’ll show you moderation, Flasshe – I’m right now flashing my moderate ass directly at the screen! Ha. Good thing I don’t have a webcam. Moderation? Hrrmph.

Hmmm, I’m not sure what it was that flagged the comment for moderation. Probably “Teenage”.
Yeah, I really like the treatment of music in GG. I think that’s because the Palladino’s really know their stuff. Too bad they got booted from their own show and someone else is taking over next season (I believe it’s the writer of this episode).
