Lookout Mountain Antenna Farm

Since I’ve talked so much about the proposed Digital TV Supertower that a consortium of local Denver broadcasters wants to put on Lookout Mountain, I thought it was long overdue to put up a picture of the existing Lookout Mountain antenna farm here (click on it go to the Flickr site and view larger images, where the towers can be seen better). This pic was taken about a mile or so from my house and the mountain and towers are way further away than they look here. Those towers are tall. The new tower would replace four of them and would be not as tall. And yet, the local residents up there, along with the town of Golden below, are still, in their shortsighted NiMBYism (Not in My BackYard), vehemently opposed to the new tower.

The latest developments in this never-ending back-and-forth fiasco are chronicled here. And here’s a recent editorial about it. Again, I’m not all that concerned about it these days, since I can get my local HD signals off the satellite now, but I’m still fascinated by the whole thing. And since the Over-The-Air tuner in my new satellite receiver is actually capable of bringing in the Lookout Mountain stations much better than my old one despite the blockage of Green Mountain, I do find myself still hoping for full-powered digital TV from there. There are some advantages to viewing the HD stations OTA rather than from the satellite (slightly better picture, includes the WB/CW affiliate which I don’t get in HD over the satellite, not affected as much by weather, etc.).

Latre.
