I’ve Got So Much To Do

Here are the lyrics to the song Your Call Is Very Important To Us, Please Hold from the album Lil’ Beethoven by Sparks:
I’m getting mixed mixed signals, mixed mixed signals,
mixed mixed mixed mixed signals
At first she said “Your call is very important to us”
And then she said “Please hold. Please hold.”
Then she said “Your call is very important to us”
And then she said “Please hold. Please hold.”
(Repeat approx one million times)
Refrain:
Green green light, red light
Green green light, red light
Mixed signals, mixed signals, mixed mixed mixed signals
I’m getting mixed signals
Hello?
Much of the sparse Lil’ Beethoven album follows this pattern of songs with few lyrics being repeated over and over again, as does the followup album Hello Young Lovers (though it’s not quite as minimalist). This pattern seems to be more prevalent than it was on previous Sparks albums, though maybe I’m misremembering and they’ve always been like this. But darned if I’m not really getting into those two albums. There’s something very Zen-like about the whole affair. It puts me at peace. Plus, the music behind the words changes enough within each song to keep things interesting. The song Perfume on HLY is one of the catchiest damn things ever, even though it’s so so repetitive. They do know how to drive a hook into the ground, sometimes sounding like an ersatz Queen.
All I do now is dick around, dick around
Every day, every day, every day, every day
Every night, every night, every night, every night
Latre.

Hey Flasshe, I love Hello Young Lovers, it’s mos’ likely winding up in my Best o’ 2006. I am a latecomer to these fellows, although I’ve been reading about them for years.
