Oscar De La Dull-a

The Oscars just keep getting duller every year. Yawn. I am so thankful for my DVR, so I can skip past the production numbers and acceptance speeches. Even then it was still too long. As far as I can tell, no one said or did anything really controversial. Nothing very unpredictable happened, aside from Alan Arkin winning Best Supporting Actor. The montages were fairly unexciting, although it’s always good to see the one of the people who passed away during the year. (The columnist in our local paper pointed out that Michael Mann’s montage, a salute to America through the movies, included a clip from Kubrick’s Paths Of Glory, which is about the French army in WWI and pretty much has absolutely nothing to do with America, except maybe as an allegory.) The opening bit with the nominees talking about themselves and making funny faces was a poor substitute for previous, funnier, Oscar ceremony starts. It set the tone for the whole blase affair. I’m not a big Ellen DeGeneres fan, and she did nothing to change my mind as host this year. Bring back Jon Stewart!

Okay, I did kind of like the shadow puppet dancers and Forrest Whitaker’s acceptance speech. But other than that… zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Oh yeah, what was that red monkey (parrot?) perched on Nicole Kidman’s shoulder?

Latre.
