The Rockies Are In The Playoffs

Are my musical tastes becoming (horrors!) mainstream? I was in a Big Lots yesterday in my quest for replacement slimline reading glasses. (They didn’t have any, but I did pick up a rake for $4 and a 6′ HDMI cable for $12. I did eventually find the reading glasses I wanted at Ace Hardware for $5.) While I was there, they were playing music loudly over the store loudspeakers. The first song was a classic piece of 60s pop, which I can’t quite recall right now. “Summer In The City” or something like that. But the second song was “Every Day” by Voxtrot (aka “When I crane my neck to kiss your head I know that there is something I can rely on”), from their self-titled debut album. I recently extolled the musical virtues of this band right here. But I didn’t expect to hear them in a Big Lots. (I’m actually ashamed to admit it I didn’t recognize it as Voxtrot, though I knew it was something I had recently acquired and thought it might be Voxtrot. It wasn’t until I got home and checked that I confirmed it.) There’s something good on the radio.
In the same post, I also talked about how The New Pornographers’ song “The Bleeding Heart Show” was being used in the TV trailer for the new movie Feast of Love. Well, last night’s episode of the new NBC series Chuck featured the title song from the new TNP album Challengers in a pivotal funeral scene at the end of the episode. (The show, BTW, is somewhat amusing/interesting, though I don’t know if I’ll keep watching it. There’s too much else on competing for my eyeballs. I watched the first two episodes back to back, which probably helped make a favorable impression.)
I guess I’ll just have to give up and join the mainstream. How’s the new Britney Spears and Kanye West? Who’s this “Feist” person? Or maybe I should just ditch Voxtrot and TNP and get back to my deep indie roots.
Pet Peeve Of The Day: For the second morning in a row, my newspaper was late. I guess all that Rockies coverage takes extra time to produce!
