The Eye Of The Devil Winks At Thee

Here’s proof that I go through life oblivious. (Also proof that I can write a blog entry about anything.) I’ll suddenly notice something for the first time that I’ve never ever noticed before, and yet has been around for years. Case in point:

Yesterday I was driving to work and was “stuck” behind one particular car for much of the time. So I had a lot of time to spend staring at this car. It was a silver 7th generation (2000 – 2005) Chevy Impala. And its taillights hypnotized me. I couldn’t stop looking at them. First it was like they were winking at me and then it was like they were talking to me: “Flasshe. You don’t really want to go to work today, do you? You don’t really want to buy Christmas gifts for all the nieces and nephews, right? You don’t really want to send out Christmas cards. You don’t really want to eat today or find shelter.” It was very odd. I couldn’t stop focusing on those lights. You know why? Because they’re freakin’ round:

Make It Stop!

You don’t see round taillights much on cars these days, especially four of them in row like this with that iris in the middle making it look like the car is alive. Even Chevy reverted back to more normal looking ones with the 2006 model Impalas. I wonder what prompted them to go with the retro round ones in the first place, since the rest of the car is fairly normal looking by today’s standards. I am totally fascinated with these. I may have to get me a used Impala and drive it around, hypnotizing other drivers into doing my nefarious bidding.

Jogged Today: No, slept in. The sidewalks are slippery from a light dusting of snow.
Today’s Weight: 163 lbs
Lunch Yesterday: Homemade ham sandwach.
Pet Peeve of the Day: Another eMusic complaint. I downloaded the album Synthesizer by Information Society, and the titles of the last two tracks are mislabeled – they’re switched (”Synthesizer” should be 12 and “The Seeds Of Pain” should be 13). It’s a shame, especially since “The Seeds Of Pain”, which is actually the last track, is the best song on the album. (As a whole, the album is fairly dull generic technopop, but that song’s a standout. Although “This Way Tonight” is kinda catchy too.) Maybe the problem wasn’t on eMusic’s end and they might’ve received the album that way, but I think they still should’ve noticed and fixed it by now. You’d think someone must’ve pointed it out to them, since at least one other person noticed the issue according to a review posted on the page. Well, I’ve brought it to their attention, so we’ll see if they do anything about it. I doubt they will.

Latre.

It’s because they are Classic Impala tailights. The first new car that I remember my family ever getting was a 1965 Impala, and it had six round tail lights, three on each side. There was also a two-light version like the one you have pictured. Like yours, they all had a kind of center iris, though much less pronounced.

    Check out this site.

    And you shall see.

Very interesting. I think Chevy should’ve gone with the three-on-each-side lights for the new ones. That would’ve been one crowded back end!

Interesting site on the Impala, although even without checking I’m pretty sure the claim that GM made 700 million full size Chevrolets in 1965 is inaccurate. According to the census, there were only 179 million people in the US at the time.

Lisa, you may not remember back in 1965 – heck, I don’t think you were even born then – but I do. Most people (except for the babies) owned 4 Impalas each. Yeah, they’re mostly taking up landfills these days, but the roads were sure a site to see back then.

Yep, it’s true what Roger says, except for the babies part. Why that blue one we bought in ‘65 was just the start. Before the year was out, my dad bought two each for me and my mom, and one for my baby (as in infant) sister, and he bought three for himself. We continued this until 1969 when he bought a green Mercury Montego MX station wagon. Guess they didn’t sell Impala’s in Orlando back then.

Actually according to this site the total production for 1965 was a little over 1 million. Of that around 800,000 were Impala and 200,000 were Super Sport.

I finally got a response (almost 2 weeks later) from eMusic on the track mislabeling issue above:

We were able to verify the issue concerning the album you reported. I will notify our Content Group of the error. We have credited your account for 1 download. All courtesy downloads will expire one year the date they are issued, as long as you remain an active subscriber.

eMusic has an extensive library of music. The update process may be as simple as uploading a new track from a CD on file or acquiring a new copy of the CD from the label. Please be assured that your inquiry will be handled as quickly as possible.

Cool that they gave me a free download. Doesn’t look like they’ve fixed the tracks yet, but at least they’re trying.
