I Will Think Of Something To Do

Ahhh, January. I think this is my favorite month. I like the winter better than the summer because of the cold (easier for sleeping) and because I don’t have to worry about “outside” stuff like yardwork. January is a time to relax after the hustle and bustle of the holidays and before doing taxes. Spring is the time of renewal, but the dead of winter before it is the time to just rest and snuggle.

Now if I can just keep from crashing into buses. If the snowstorms will just stay gone long enough for everything to completely melt, I’ll be much happier with January 2008.

Speaking of storms, a few days ago, I read Gil’s post about driving around in the Bay Area storm, and having to cross three bridges on his way home, and about how he paid $3.56/gallon to gas up the car. $3.56?? Wow, that’s steep. And then I read today that Colorado currently has the cheapest gas in the nation. So that made me feel good. I bet that doesn’t happen very often. I was driving home from work today in my rental car, which doesn’t get nearly as good gas mileage as the Prius (*sob*), and I passed the Safeway where I get gas: $2.74/gallon. And with my ten cent discount, that brings it down to $2.64. Ha, you poor bastards in Hawaii.

Another thing that made me feel good today is that they’re finally going to release the animated Sam & Max: Freelance Police complete series on DVD March 11th. This show was way ahead of its time and it snuck a whole big goober of non sequitur weirdness into Saturday morning TV for the few seasons it was on. Getting all 24 episodes and a bunch of special features for under $30 is a huge bargain. (Note: The comics are pretty keen as well. I haven’t played the computer games, but they look swell as well.) “Death From Above!”

Keen and swell and really weird also applies to this next item. Here’s an mp3 I got a long time ago and which I just recently ran across again while browsing the tunes. It’s the theme song from a popular late 60s/early 70s cop show set in the state referenced above, but it’s not the version you’re used to. Bet you didn’t know it had words, did you? And that those words were sung by a member of the Rat Pack? I’m not naming the show or the performer because I’m hoping this won’t show up in a Google search. Enjoy! I don’t know how long I’ll keep it posted. As my girlfriend said when she heard me playing it, “That’s just wrong”.

[Edit: A more permanent link to the song may possibly be found here.]

Jogged Today: Yes (@ 30°F). Still not back up to doing the full two mile route, but I did run further than yesterday.
Songs That Came Up On The iPod While Jogging:

  • “Fighting In Built Up Areas” (Ladytron)
  • “Great Things” (Echobelly)*
  • “Old Hat” (Harvey Danger)
  • “I Found You” (The Fixx)

* – Note: This is one of my all-time favorite songs.

Latre.

Oh yeah – re: gas prices, Google calculator helped me figure out that we’re paying the equivalent of US$4.67/gallon here for fuel (they call it “petrol” in metric) which is even higher than L.A. prices. And we just bought a luxury car that doesn’t run well on the lower octane grade!

It’s still a lot less than they fork over in Europe. Which makes it all the stranger that THEY don’t want to invade Iran, home of 10cents/gallon gas….

When I was in England in October, gasoline was 99p/litre which equates to around US$7.50 per gallon. I did the conversions twice to prove it was that much.

What about the lyrics to the “Bewitched” theme?

There’s lyrics to the theme from “Star Trek” (TOS) too, if you want to get really obscure. They were written to take advantage of a legal loophole of the era – never used, but they ensured the guy who wrote the melody didn’t get residuals (or something). Maybe these other examples are for similar reasons?
