UnSuper Humility

This morning, I was watching the series finale of The Batman, which is a much weaker cartoon than the old Batman: The Animated Series. So I’m not surprised it didn’t last as long. Anyway, this one hour finale was a Justice League-centric episode and had a bunch of the JLA heroes, including Superman. Suddenly, though I’ve never felt this way before, it was strange hearing everyone else call Superman “Superman”. I started thinking about that. I know that Supes didn’t pick his name – the press or the public or whatever did – but he’s kind of a humble guy and it seems odd that he would want to be referred to as that. All the other heroes have names that don’t suggest any sort of intrinsic worth: “Batman”, “Green Arrow”, “Hawkman”, “The Atom”, etc. Yet the name “Superman” really says a lot about what someone thinks of himself. Maybe he should’ve gone with “Flying Guy” or something.
But then again, he was the first, so maybe he deserves it…

I think he should have called himself “Julian H. Cope.”

They call him “Supes” for short. Anyone with underwear that colorful can call himself anything he wants.
