1533 – Queen Elizabeth I of England is born
1776 – World’s first submarine attack
1864 – American Civil War: Atlanta, Georgia, is evacuated
1901 – The Boxer Rebellion in China officially ends
1921 – In Atlantic City, New Jersey, the first Miss America Pageant, a two-day event, is held.
1927 – The first fully electronic television system is achieved by Philo Taylor Farnsworth
1936 – Buddy Holly is born
1940 – Dario Argento (Italian film director) is born
1945 – Japanese forces on Wake Island, which they had held since December of 1941, surrender to U.S. Marines.
1951 – Chrissie Hynde and Mark Isham (musicians) are born
1953 – Benmont Tench (musician) is born
1954 – Corbin Bernsen (actor, L.A. Law) is born
1954 – Michael Emerson (actor, Lost) is born
1955 – Mira Furlan (actress, Babylon 5, Lost) is born
1956 – Diane Warren (songwriter) is born
1963 – Eazy-E (rapper) is born
1963 – The Pro Football Hall of Fame opens in Canton, Ohio with 17 charter members.
1967 – Toby Jones (actor) is born
1969 – Angie Everhart (model) and Diana Farr (actress, Rescue Me) are born
1970 – Tom Everett Scott (actor) is born
1973 – Shannon Elizabeth (actress, American Pie) is born
1978 – Keith Moon (musician) dies
1987 – Evan Rachel Wood (actress) is born
1994 – James Clavell (author) dies
1998 – Google is founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two students at Stanford University
2003 – Warren Zevon (musician) dies

I never understood why lists like this say things like “Buddy Holly is born” instead of “Buddy Holly was born.”

Well, that was my own convention on the birth/death stuff. Although I was following the present tense standard of the historical events I copy/pasted. I guess they want to make it sound more immediate - you are there as the Boxer Rebellion ends!
